Challenge Fund Website Article: How
Often Does He Really Need a Rabies Shot? |
![]()
For years, veterinarians, scientists and state governments have encouraged or forced pet owners to vaccinate their dogs for Rabies on a yearly basis. As more scientific studies have been done on pet vaccines, and as more and more pets are suffering from autoimmune diseases that are crippling or even deadly, it has come to light that common vaccination protocols have produced an era of over-vaccination. The years of over-vaccination has taken their toll on many breeds of dogs and cats, with devastating losses for many pet owners. Dr. Jean Dodds has been a leader in crossing the boundaries between what is recommended and what is actually needed, in terms of vaccination efficacy, range of immunity, and measuring the good done by vaccines vs. the harm done by over vaccination. Her work, through her Hemopet Foundation, has led the way in showing the dog and cat fancy that we may be doing too much. Challenge studies are used to show the duration of immunity of a vaccine. Previous challenge studies have been done on parvovirus and distemper vaccines showing that immunity lasts at least 7 years after vaccination, and may even last a lifetime. These challenge study results are then used to try to convince the veterinary system to change their protocols on vaccinations, and have successfully gotten veterinarians to stop requiring annual vaccinations on a number of the "core" vaccines in the hopes of reducing the amount of resulting illnesses from over vaccination. Currently, rabies vaccines are required either annually, or every three years, depending on where you live and the laws in your state, city, or municipality. Rabies vaccine is one of the most dangerous, with the highest level of adverse reactions, and with some of the most deadly reactions. And while rabies is a serious disease, the purpose of the vaccine isn't necessarily to protect your pet, but instead is to protect humans. Since other vaccines' duration of immunity has been shown to be much greater than 1-3 years, logic dictates that the same should be true for rabies vaccinations. The ONLY WAY laws can be changed to limit the frequency of this potentially harmful vaccine is to provide a challenge study showing scientific evidence that duration of immunity lasts many more years than previously thought. And the ONLY WAY such a study will take place is if we can raise $1.5 million to fund the study!
